Retrofit And Restoration Of The Building Complex Of National Theatre Of Athens

The project involves the retrofit, restoration and enhancements of the complex of the National Theatre of Athens which occupies a city block on the Ag.Konstantinou 24-26 Str. in Athens centre and consists of the following modules:

  • The main building of the National Theatre – Ziller Building (built about 1900 by the famous German architect Ernst Ziller)
  • Existing building the “New Stage” (Old New Stage).
  • Replacement of the existing building center stage with a new independent steel structure which extends over the building of the Experimental Stage.
  • A new space area of the New Stage with improved operating conditions and services.
  • Elimination of basements water-proof problems of the incomplete existing structure of the Experimental Stage, storage and parking areas.

The interventions on the structure of the building (mainly masonry) include concrete jacket where the architectural design and decoration permit, strengthening with the use of composites (steel plates, FRPs), injections and ties at the corners of the buildings with front and rear side stainless steel anchors.

The new structure of the Main Stage consists of the upper structure that is entirely steel and the lower structure consisting of perimeter walls, columns and slabs of reinforced concrete.

The new area of the New Stage has a structure of reinforced concrete and is supported by the existing building of the underground parking in four new levels.
