Pankritio Olympic Stadium – Heraklion, Crete

Participation In Final And Detail Structural Design.
Transportation And Hydraulics Design Of The Surrounding Landscape

The Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion Crete was part of the construction program for sport facility construction for the Athens Olympic Games of 2004 in order to organize there a number of the Olympic Soccer Games.

The project involves the completion of the Stadium  wherein a first portion of the structure had been constructed in a previous period. This existing reinforced concrete frame had to be evaluated by lab tests and maintained in order to allow for the continuation and completion of the construction.

More specifically there were constructed parts of the premises buildings and athletic facilities rooms underneath, the stadium terrain (athletics tracks and soccer field), the two canopies over the premise areas, the light pylons and the Landscape area around the main stadium (parking areas, underground water tanks, etc. .)

The two canopies covering the two premises at there longitudinal sides have a total projected area of  5.500 m2 each.

The main steel structure is statically independent of the other structures of the stadium and consists of a total of six main space truss bodies of hex shaped and radial direction, with a cantilever span of  approximately 34.00 m, five space truss double layered bodies filling the area between the main trusses, a total of six vertical twin pin-joint steel elements (tractors – struts) and a total of six twin vertical pillars of reinforced concrete structure which support the steel roof via hinge connections.
